Big Pit, Torfaen
The Big Pit is a real Welsh coal mine and mining museum. The pit is near the town of Blaenafon, which played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution.
At the Big Pit you can take a guided tour 300ft underground into the heart of the colliery. Before visitors make the descent, they are given a helmet and cap lamp and stripped of all contraband items. Experience colliery staff will then take you deep underground to see what life was like as a coal miner.
If you prefer to stay above ground, you can visit the colliery buildings such as the Fan House, Blacksmiths Forge, Stable and Winding House. The Pithead Baths contain an exhibition on the mining industry and the tools that were used and the people that worked in the industry. There is also a multi-media tour of a modern coal mine by a virtual miner.
Once you've completed the tour there is a gift shop to buy souvenirs and a coffee shop open during the peak season. Entrance to this museum is free.
