Beeston Castle and Woodland park, England

The 'Castle of the Rock' was built in the 1220s by the Earl of Chester as a defence against aristocratic rivals and a declaration of the Earl's power.

The inner bailey, defended by a deep rock-cut ditch and a mighty double-towered gatehouse is the best-preserved part of the castle and commands beautiful views across 8 counties. It also contains the castle well, which at over 100 metres deep is of the deepest in any English castle. This is believed to be the place where King Richard II hid his treasure from his pursuing enemies in 1399.

Beeston is also a haven for wildlife and the unspoiled woodland makes it home to a host of birds and small mammals.

There are regular family events at the castle.

Disabled Facilities

Beeston Castle is built on a very steep hill, and wheelchair access to the top and the woodland walk is not recommended. Please also note that much of the site has uneven surfaces. The caves are no longer accessible as they are very fragile. Please feel free to use the castle green for picnics. The shop has an exhibition about the history of the site and staff are always available to assist where necessary.
