Beamish Open Air Museum, County Durham
Nestling in 300 acres of beautiful countryside Beamish open air museum vividly recreates life in the North of England in the early 1800s and 1900s.
Unlike ordinary museums, Beamish displays its objects, machinery and furniture in realistic surroundings with trained staff in period costume ready to answer your questions.
You can experience life in the 1820s in the popular market town by touring the Co-operative Shops, sweet Factor, Motor & Cycle Works, Dentist's Home & Surgery and much more. You can do this using the tramway or by taking a ride on a horse drawn bus.
Steam enthusiasts can ride the Museum's replica of "Locomotion No.1" built by George Stephenson in 1825 and view the third oldest surviving locomotive in the world.
Take a step back in time at Home farm where you can see rare breeds of animals and witness the day to day running of a farm as it was 100 years ago. Contrast this with Colliery village where the coal industry is bought back to life.
Beamish offers a full calendar of activities from sweet making to traction engine rallies.
