In Roman times Bath was called Acqua Sulis. The Romans built some baths there, where they
could bathe Near to the baths is a spring. Here over a million litres of mineral water
rises each day at a temperature of over 46°C. The Romans thought this must be the work of
the goddess Sulis Minerva hence the name.
The baths are nearly 2000 years old, built next to a hot spring, served many pilgrims
visiting the Temple of Sulis Minerva. Personal audio tours in English, French, German,
Italian, Spanish and Japanese are available.
Inside the Pump Room there is now a restaurant where you
can take morning coffee, lunches and teas and sample the hot spa water which still
comes up from 3km below ground. The Roman Baths shop sells books and gifts related to this
site. The Roman Baths have also introduced a new audio guide in Dutch |
