Barnard Castle, Durham
Barnard Castle sits high above the river Tees in Teesdale, County Durham and was founded by the Normans but rebuilt in the 12th century by Bernard de Balliol from whom it took its name.
The castle is divided into four wards which are all walled in stone. The inner ward is protected by a deep ditch cut into the rock and within this ward are the remains of the most important castle buildings including the Round Tower and the Great Hall.
Its previous occupants include John Balliol (King of Scotland), Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and King Richard III. After Richard III's death the castle fell to ruins and in 1630 it was sold to Sir Henry Vane who used part of the stone as materials for improvements to Raby Castle. Today the castle is maintained by English Heritage.
There are no facilities at the castle but you can use the public toilets in the car park and purchase food and drink in the town centre. Alternatively you can take a picnic. Dogs are welcome on leads.
