Barley Hall, York

Barley Hall is a reconstructed medieval town house which was originally built around 1360 by the monks of Nostell Priory. A new wing was added in the 15th century. Soon after, the Hall became the home of William Snawsell Goldsmith, Alderman and Lord Mayor of York. The property went into a slow decline and by the 19th and 20th centuries was heavily sub-divided and in poor condition. It was bought by the York Archaeological Trust in 1987, renamed Barley Hall, and heavily restored in a controversial project to form a museum.

A full archaeological investigation of the interior has revealed the remains of the floor of the Great Hall and, in the courtyard, the remains of the exterior stairway to the Great Chamber on the first floor.

Work to restore the Hall to its former glory began in 1990 and it re-opened to the public in 1993.
