Arundel Castle, West Sussex

Arundel Castle was built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel. From this time onwards it has been used as a stately home to various families before becoming the principal seat of the Duke of Norfolk.

Many original features can be seen like the crenellated Norman keep, gatehouse and barbican and the lower part of Bevis Tower. Add to this the grand interior containing tapestries, furniture and paintings by Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Canaletto.

From the 1870's to the 1890's the house was largely renovated in the magnificent gothic style architecture and is one of the finest examples of its type in England today. The library is said to have one of the finest Regency interiors in the world.

The Castle hosts many events, activity days and demonstrations during the summer including jousting, archery and fencing.

The grounds and gardens are also of great interest with different themed areas and the recently restored Earl's garden.

Opening Times

Open from Good Friday to the beginning of November from Tuesdays to Sundays, plus bank holiday Mondays.

The castle rooms open at 12, the keep at 11am and the chapel and grounds at 10am.
