Appuldurcombe House, Isle of Wight

Appuldurcombe House is the shell of a large 18th-century baroque country house of the Worsley family. It is an important example of English baroque architecture.

Appuldurcombe was built as a priory in 1100. It later became a convent, and then a family home. The site subsequently came into the ownership of the Worsleys. The present house was built in 1702 by architect was John James.

The house was occupied in the early 20th century by a community of Benedictine monks. Troops were accomodated in the house during both the first and second world wars. The house was badly damaged in 1943 by a mine.

The front section of the house has been re-roofed and glazed, and some of the interior recreated. The house is regarded as one of the most haunted places on the island. Ghostly occurrances are said to include the appearance of brown-clad monks, dark shapes seen roaming the grounds, aa babies cry and claims of unseen hands going through pages of the visitor's book.
