Anne of Cleves' House, East Sussex

Anne of Cleves (1515–1557) the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England and so was Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. The marriage was never consummated, and she was not crowned queen consort. Anne of Cleves' House formed part of Anne's divorce settlement from Henry VIII in 1541. It is a 15th century timber-framed Wealden hall-house which was restored by the architect Walter Godfrey.

The house contains collections of Sussex pottery, a wide ranging collection of furniture and artefacts from around Sussex, and the bedroom and kitchen are furnished to resemble their appearance at the time of Cleves's ownership. Other displays feature Lewes from the 16th century to the present day and the Wealden ironwork gallery has artefacts from firebacks and cannon to boot-scrapers and chimney backs, illustrating this influential Sussex industry.

It is home to wide-ranging collections of furniture and artefacts of Sussex interest in addition to an important collection of iron fire backs. The house is open to the public and plays host to functions throughout the year, including parties, weddings and small informal concerts.[2]
