Alnwick Castle, Northumberland
Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England and is currently home to the Duke of Northumberland.
The earliest parts of the castle were erected in 1096 and in 1309 it came into the hands of the 1st Baron Percy who developed it into the castle we see today. Visitors can see the extravagant state rooms, one of the finest collections of Renaissance art, impressive battlements and variety of exhibitions all set within the stunning grounds that offer beautiful views across the Northumberland countryside.
During the summer season there are plenty of events for visitors, ranging from magicians to archery and falconry displays. Children can participate in the Knights quest which allows them to dress, play, joust and learn to fight as they did 700 years ago. Alnwick castle was also the setting for three of the Harry Potter films and it is quite common to see Potter fans walking about in Hogwarts uniforms!
There is a souvenir shop and a choice of restaurant or bistro for food.
