78 Derngate: The Charles Rennie Mackintosh House and Museum, NN1 IUH

Born in Glasgow, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) who left school at the age of 14, was a Scottish architect, designer, watercolourist and sculptor. He was a designer in the Arts and Crafts movement and also the main promoter of Art Nouveau in the UK. He had a considerable influence on European design.

Mackintosh had a brief but brilliant career as an architect. Most of his commissions were completed in and around Glasgow between 1896 and 1911. His significant work includes the Glasgow School of Art and The Hill House.

Remodelled by Mackintosh in 1916, 78 Derngate now contains a restaurant, craft and gift shop as well as changing gallery exhibitions. Derngate is believed to be Mackintosh's most significant piece of design work after leaving Glasgow.
