1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield, East Sussex
In 1066 the Normans defeated the English at the battle of Hastings. Subsequently William the Conquerer founded Battle Abbey as penance for the bloodshed and as a memorial to those who died during the battle.
This historic site includes Battle Abbey buildings and ruins, a visitor centre with a film and exhibition about the Battle of Hastings, audio tours of the battlefield site, and the monks' gatehouse with recovered artefacts.
